Art and Soul: An Intro to Loving an Old Method of Expressing One's Self

Updated: Jun 10, 2018

"We are all artists, painting our lives upon the canvas of reality. Mix the colors your own way and apply emotion liberally. Don't be afraid to let your brushstrokes show, and above all else, make sure your art has soul." ~Cristen Rodgers

I love everything about art. I love the way a paintbrush applies anything from oils to watercolors and come out so exquisite on what was a dull blank canvas or piece of paper. Sometimes it makes me feel giddy and excited to let creativeness flow, and I always wonder if other artists felt the same way, and I hope they did. From what Cristen Rodgers has expressed in his quote above, it seems like every kind of artist, those who paint pictures, compose music, and create poetry really seem to display their "expressiveness" especially from their souls. Now, I don't actually believe, though as beautiful as 2D or 3D artwork is, send out "spiritual" sensations or have certain powers in them, but sending something emotionally? That I can say some paintings can give a person once they see them or make them. But most importantly, I believe you have to express yourself fully to let out something to the world.

"Above all else, make sure your art has soul."

I started creating art for years now, even since I was 5 I drew my own "illustrations" and made finger paintings in and out of my homeschooling. Capturing things for sketches and improving my drawings was what I remember came first before I wanted to explore more painting basics and techniques. Simple ideas of drawing was what I learned and have taught some of the same things for younger kids back in 2015.

Long story short, I didn't really express things that I felt was good to show the world at first, even right after I began my interest in painting. I believe it was during my Beginning Painting class at Cuesta, when assigned a non-representational work of art, I decided to go with something meaningful. Using some inspirational pictures and a good color scheme, I went with an idea of an introvert dreaming about becoming more open to people (I used two open books to represent "openness"), a pretty water lily (to bloom), and a tree (to branch out). Really sharing things from personal experience or just expressing one's self became a good concept for drawing or painting since then. I think It can also improve anyone's artistic talent, because everyone should do their own thing without being fully restricted to one big rule when it comes to art, even in writing, poetry, and things like that.

Learning to Enjoy Expressing

So why is it still important to express yourself in art? Well, because it is good to do so. It isn't a lesser thing to take a picture of something incredible or set up your own still life to make your own personal style of painting or drawing, which I still do often. I'm saying is I love having to show some feeling through some of my artwork, and I love that other artists do so too. I encourage others to think about it and apply it to their own creativeness, and it will be much more enjoyable.
