"Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment, until it becomes
a memory." ~Dr.Suess
Now that my family and I have become aware of the new policies and laws enforcing quarantine to prevent the spread of COVID-19, we're making a special effort to provide for each other and even figure out ways to be productive. Having to be sheltered-in-place is both a beneficial and difficult lifestyle for us and everyone we know. Sure there are things we are catching up on when we're at home: being together (of course), housework (the laundry though), finishing our remodeling the house, etc. It's a downside when we're in the midst of unemployment, so we try to stock up and be easy on our groceries and meals. But there is another question when it comes to being sheltered: what are more activities and hobbies can we do when we're social distancing?
I'll tell you what my family and I have done to keep ourselves up when we're at home: we're giving ourselves time to finish things that we've started such as sewing projects, we're actively walking when the weather is nice, enjoying playtime and snuggle time with our month-old baby, reading, planning movie time and mealtimes together, and baking homemade bread and other treats. We can veg out too from time to time, just like anyone else. But we know what we can and want to do together.
The other good thing I find in being quarantined? After many months of working, I wasn't able to do studio art work as I should have. Though I can't really go out into the world and be bold in finding subjects to paint or draw or study, I love to go just out to the backyard and find a lot of inspiration from the spring atmosphere. Having family (and especially our baby) around has turned my wheels, thinking about the perfect thing to sketch. (A note to those who are reading this: don't stop doing what you're doing, artists. Just keep going with your skills and talents during this inconceivable time. Not only is this my experience right now that I'm sharing, it's also a reminder that we can still do things we love at home.)
We're trying to make the best of things by making everything a special moment and not becoming fearful. We're sad for how it seems insane, but we're not leaning towards panicky. We're appreciating those who are trying hard to contribute and help to stop the flow of COVID-19, like the medical professionals. I think we should help them ourselves by thinking of who are at risk and voluntarily distancing each other. We should be staying home and enjoying our household's company in this dire time. How do we make it a good thing to be sheltered? Shaping valuable moments with family you're with in art, domestic hobbies, games, reading scripture, and even getting into conversations!
We believe it'll get better after this. All we can do now is keep everyone healthy and safe, and enjoy being together. Even after the coronavirus pandemic, I think people should realize how important it still is to share good memories you can still have at home. Do something creative and artistic with one another. Anything to keep a peace of mind and being wise with how we feel being sheltered. And love one another especially.
